Decent LinkedIn Live AMA – Q&A with Nick Soman

Decent updates
Direct Primary Care

1️⃣ What inspired you to create Decent?

👉 Nick: “My personal inspiration comes from my parents, who were both primary care doctors. Over time, they became frustrated with how big insurance companies controlled patient care and limited the time they could spend with patients. That realization stuck with me.

From a professional standpoint, I saw how healthcare costs were escalating and believed that putting Direct Primary Care (DPC) at the center of a health plan could make care more affordable and effective. That’s why we built Decent—to empower brokers and businesses with DPC-centered health plans that improve outcomes and reduce costs.”

2️⃣ How can brokers get started with Decent?

👉 Nick: “We make it easy! Brokers can:

We’ll connect you with Chantal Rousseau, our VP of Channel Relations, to help you quote groups and learn everything you need about DPC.”

3️⃣ How does virtual-first care impact DPC?

👉 Nick: “Virtual-first models can increase DPC capacity by expanding access to care—especially for employers with distributed teams. When practices gain enough members, they can open physical spaces to strengthen the DPC model and better serve local communities.”

4️⃣ What are the biggest benefits of DPC for businesses and employees?

👉 Nick:

Significant cost savings – Some groups save 40% compared to fully insured plans.

Happier, healthier employees – DPC provides unlimited access to primary care, improving day-to-day health.

Stronger patient-doctor relationships – Employees can text, call, or see their doctor same day or next day.

Better long-term health – Preventive care leads to fewer ER visits and hospital stays.

5️⃣ What’s the biggest challenge brokers face when pitching DPC?

👉 Nick: “The key is leading with cost savings. Employers are focused on reducing costs, so the best way to introduce DPC is by saying:

‘We can help you save money while offering better coverage.’

Then, when they ask ‘How?’, that’s when you explain that DPC drives these cost savings. If you lead with DPC without explaining the financial benefits, clients might assume it’s expensive or niche, like concierge medicine.”

6️⃣ What are the biggest regulatory hurdles for DPC?

👉 Nick:

📌 Tax Deductibility – Efforts are underway to allow DPC premiums to be HSA-compatible and tax-deductible.

📌 Medicaid & Government Integration – Policymakers are exploring how DPC fits into Medicaid and larger programs.

📌 Employer Adoption – Companies need clear pathways to easily integrate DPC into their benefits offerings.

7️⃣ What are the biggest misconceptions about DPC?

👉 Nick:

DPC is only for wealthy people – Not true. Many DPC patients don’t have insurance and use DPC as their primary healthcare.

DPC is just concierge medicine – Unlike concierge doctors, DPC physicians don’t bill insurance and charge low monthly fees ($50–$100/month).

DPC is only for healthy people – In reality, patients with chronic conditions benefit the most because they get direct, ongoing support without barriers.

8️⃣ Are there enough doctors to support DPC at scale?

👉 Nick: “It’s a concern, but DPC is making primary care more attractive to doctors. Many primary care physicians have been burned out by insurance-driven models, and DPC gives them autonomy and a better quality of life.

We also support nurse practitioners practicing within their license—they are an important part of expanding DPC access.”

9️⃣ What’s the best way to market and position DPC to clients?

👉 Nick:

💡 Start with cost savings. Say: ‘Are you looking to save money on healthcare?’—because every employer is. Then explain how DPC makes that possible.

💡 Get DPC doctors involved. If possible, bring a local DPC doctor into your pitch meetings. Having a doctor explain “I will be your provider” makes a huge impact.

💡 Partner with DPCs. Brokers and DPCs working together create strong, local solutions for employer groups.
